Fundação Fernando Pessoa President
Medical education for the future must extend beyond knowledge of biomedical sciences. The future of medicine is linked with the development of professional values and behaviours that rely on constant updates on knowledge and clinical skills. These skills will be enhanced by advancements in digital diagnostic technologies, such as molecular or imaging technology, and challenged by Artificial Intelligence, genomics, and robotics. These advancements will enable early disease detection and increase the chances of successful treatment or cure.

University
Fernando
Pessoa
University Fernando Pessoa (UFP) was recognized as a public interest organization by the Portuguese State in July 1996 and it is the result of a pioneering higher education project initiated in the 1980’s with the creation of two higher education institutes that provided its structural basis. Today, the University has around five thousand students and is organized in three faculties (Health Sciences, Human and Social Sciences, Science and Technology), one School of Health Sciences and one autonomous unit (Ponte de Lima College). Being a foundational University, UFP has never been market oriented. It has managed to develop into a solid private higher education institution with a strong academic focus and a constant concern with quality maintenance and improvement in what concerns its teaching, research and extension project.

Health Services
The UFP and the ESS-FP combine, in the pedagogical clinics, a dual aspect of the activity. On the one hand, health promotion and care provision and, on the other hand, the academic and curricular perspective, which allows students from the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (Psychology) and the School of Health to engage in supervised clinical practice with patients under an informed consent system.
Also in the area of health services, the HE assumes itself as a provider of general and specialized health care, ensured by professionals of excellence.

Prevention procedures in Internal emergency situations
For rapid intervention in emergency situations, the HE has an Internal Security Plan with properly prepared teams to deal with imminent danger and act if or when necessary. This plan aims to establish appropriate action procedures, in order to guarantee the quick and safe evacuation of occupants in the event of an emergency, using routes defined as safe to get to meeting points located outside the building (PDF).
Procedures in case of school accident
All UFP students benefit from personal accident insurance. This insurance covers the treatment, disability or death expenses coming from personal accidents inside UFP’s facilities or from UFP’s related activities, or during the normal and direct route going and returning between home and the educational institution.
1. The student should go to the Fernando Pessoa Hospital Human Resources Office within 48 hours to report the accident. Our office hours are from Monday to Friday from 11 am to 12 pm and from 3 to 4 pm, but if the student cannot come during these hours, he/she must send us an email to rh.he@ufp.edu.pt (with full name, student number and phone number) or call us to (+351 222 455 412).
2. Depending on the accident severity, an ambulance (INEM) must be called or the student may go to the nearest public hospital.
The following expenses are covered by this insurance:
a) treatment resulting from accidents occurred within the scope of the school activity carried out in Portuguese territory, except for those resulting from accidents occurred in two-wheeled vehicles;
b) sports activities promoted by the Institution, NOT including extreme sports (sports with land, water or air vehicles, motor vehicles, winter sports, boxing, karate, martial arts and bullfighting) and all competitions promoted by entities outside the activity of our Institution;
NB: Medical expenses (consultations, treatments, surgery, etc.) made in any health unit and/or the first transport expenses of the injured person (taxi, bus, etc.) must be paid by the student for later
reimbursement, upon the presentation to UFP’s Human Resources Office of the original receipts (which must have the student’s name) proving the payment.
If you have any questions, please contact Fernando Pessoa Hospital Human Resources Office by email (rh.he@ufp.edu.pt) or by telephone (+351 22 2455 412).
Sports & Academy
At UFP, we give great importance to physical activity and sports, whose contribution we know is fundamental to health and well-being. In this sense, we have a Health and Leisure Academy and we encourage university sports promoted by the Student Association.
Academic and cultural activities also play a fundamental role, creating value and promoting bonds that last after the end of the university course. The Student Association, the Student Nucleus and the Tunas are examples of this, proving the dynamics of the university.

Gondomar
City life
Gondomar is a both name and a land of great historical magnitude. The discovery of gold mines in the surrounding areas, as well as the strategic posture of “Crasto” (mount), attest to the Romans’ presence in these places. Gondomar obtained the “Carta de Couto” (document written by the king to grant a given land to a clergy lord) from D. Sancho I in 1193, which was later confirmed by the king D. Afonso II, as a result of the “Inquirições” (the inventive method by which the king obtained to ascertain whether his assets were being properly cared for in his kingdom). During the reign of D. Manuel I it was bestowed the first charter to the “Municipality of Gondomar” in 1515. Gondomar is a municipality in the Metropolitan Area of Porto with a land area of 130,7 km2 and a river extension of roughly 37 km.

Porto
City life
Porto is located in the North of Portugal and it is one of the main economic and industrial centres in the country. The second largest Portuguese city is also known for its Port Wine, its Food and the unmatched hospitality of its inhabitants.
Also known as “The Invicta”, for its trade-related history and its love of Liberty, the 21st century Porto is, equally, a dynamic city, constantly renewing itself, with green spaces and a public transport network that connect the city to the world.
