COMMUNICATION SCIENCES

Full Accreditation, for 6 years, by A3ES (Portuguese Accreditation Agency), 15-01-2016 (link)

The second cycle of studies in Communication Sciences is divided into three branches, each with a particular focus on different fields of knowledge, duly structured according to a theoretical-practical framework that includes:

  • Journalism
  • Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing
  • Communication Technologies

The structure of this cycle of studies was designed to respond to the needs arising from the permanent updating of the concept and theories of communication, so that in each of the areas in question the student finds the opportunity to deepen knowledge, carry out bibliographic reviews, discover new areas of interest, but also to contact with professional experiences often reinforced by the activity, complementary to the academy of an admittedly qualified faculty.

The objectives of this cycle of studies can be described according to three axes:

– To provide students with a set of theoretical, scientific, and practical skills that will enable them to gain a taste for discovery. A requirement that the challenges of communication imply, either because of the reconfiguration of the discursive models of journalism, or because of the changing and constant improvement of paradigms and technological supports, or because of the new associations between (investment in) advertising and (production of) value.

– To create an intellectual and argumentative support, with scientific significance, that allows the student to be able to deal ethically and professionally with the diversity and abundance of informative flows that fix the diverse agendas of contemporary societies.

– To provide students with instruments, tools and techniques that allow them to be competitive in different professional performances in the area of Communication.

The range of career opportunities is based on the premise that, on the one hand, many professionals need regular academic updating, as in countries with more advanced economies, and on the other hand, they imply that a second cycle of studies is now understood in the panorama of the university offer as an essential consolidation of knowledge and experiences acquired in the context of the degree.

Thus, this 2nd Cycle of Studies in Communication Sciences opens or reinforces possibilities of work in the following areas: journalism (writing and editing); press assessorship, communication and political assessorship; advertising creation; project management; production of media content; professional communication technologies in areas as different as graphic editing and cataloging information.
